We are looking for people who live on more than one edge.

Ecotone believes the most interesting ideas grow where disciplines meet. So the speakers we look for are often ecotones themselves: living between several disciplines, several identities, sometimes several countries, and doing work with a real connection to sustainability or nature. If that sounds like you, tell us which labels you carry, and what question you would bring to the edge.

Who we are looking for Desiderata

  1. i.
    Plural identities

You are a researcher and a founder, a physician and an administrator, a designer and a fieldworker: one person, several identities.

  2. ii.
    Rooted in sustainability or nature

This one is essential: your research, practice, product, policy, creative work or teaching has a real connection to sustainability or nature.

  3. iii.
    A border you live on

Your work sits between two disciplines, and you often find yourself translating one side’s language for the other.

  4. iv.
    A different life experience

You bring a different country, generation, ethnicity, occupation or upbringing, and so you see sustainability differently. (Not required, but we would love to hear from you.)

Common questions

Who should apply?

People who carry more than one label: who live and work between two (or more) disciplines, industries or countries. You don’t need to be the most senior person in your field, but you do need to make yourself understood by the department next door, and to move them with your questions.

Do I need several identities?

Not necessarily. If you have one identity but keep thinking about where it meets other disciplines, you are very welcome too. Tell us where that border lies.

What does the form ask?

Your disciplines and identities (list as many as you like), where you are based, how your work connects to sustainability or nature, and the topic you would bring. The form is bilingual and takes about 5 minutes.

Can I apply from outside Taiwan?

Yes. The forum is mainly held in person, but through Diverse Voices we also collect short films from people everywhere about what they hope interdisciplinary sustainability can become. You can tell us in the form how you would prefer to take part.

What happens after I apply?

We draw up a shortlist around each volume’s theme and line-up, and get in touch when there is a good fit. Timelines and arrangements are explained in detail when we get in touch.
